Brow mapping: the foundation of every brow
The short answer
Brow mapping is measuring and drawing your brows before any pigment goes on. Using a pre-inked string, a pencil, and your own landmarks, I place each brow's start, arch, and tail, check that both sides balance, watch how your brows move, and adjust until you approve the shape.
Mapping is my favorite part of every appointment, and honestly, the part I'm most obsessed with. It's the foundation of everything. A beautiful technique can't save a shape that's in the wrong place, and a well-mapped brow looks right on you even before it's healed.
How I map your brows, step by step
- Find your center. I mark a center line down the middle of your face, so both brows are measured from the same place instead of eyeballed separately.
- Mark the start. The front of each brow lines up with the side of your nose. This sets the spacing between your brows.
- Find the arch. From the side of your nose, I angle a line through your eye while you look straight ahead. Where it crosses the brow is where your arch naturally wants to sit.
- Place the tail. A second angle from the side of your nose, past the outer corner of your eye, shows where the tail should end so it lifts your eye instead of dragging it down.
- Level and balance. A pre-inked string pulled across both brows checks that the starts, arches, and tails sit at matching heights, and that the thickness is balanced side to side.
- Watch you move. I have you raise your brows, relax, and talk. Most people lift one brow higher than the other, and your brow bone and muscles affect how the shape reads in real life, not just sitting still.
- Draw, check, adjust. I fill in the full shape with pencil, you look in the mirror, and we adjust until you love it. Nothing permanent happens until you say yes.
Why mapping matters so much
No face is perfectly symmetrical, and yours isn't supposed to be. The goal of mapping isn't identical brows. It's balanced brows: sisters, not twins. Mapping catches the small differences, like one brow sitting a little higher or a gap on one side, so the finished result looks even when you're talking, laughing, and living your life.
The measurements are my starting point, not a formula. Your natural hair growth, the look you're going for, and whether you like a soft or defined brow all shape the final drawing. That's where the art comes in.
Mapping for touch-ups, refreshes, and corrections
I re-check your mapping at every visit. At your 6-week touch-up we confirm the shape healed where it should, and at future color refreshes we can adjust as your face and style change. If you have old brow work that's placed too high, too low, or uneven, mapping shows exactly what can be improved.
I highly recommend Jenn. Aging and thyroid issues had affected my brows more than I even realized. Jenn was very intentional and thoughtful throughout the entire process and listened carefully to what I wanted. She showed me different options so that I would be happy with the end result. I am beyond thrilled with my brows now. I love them and am going to be Jenn's customer for life!
Common questions
What is brow mapping?
Brow mapping is measuring and drawing your brow shape before permanent makeup, using a pre-inked string, a pencil, and landmarks like the sides of your nose and your eyes. It sets where each brow starts, arches, and ends, and makes sure both sides balance.
Is brow mapping included in my appointment?
Yes. Mapping is part of every brow appointment, and it's never rushed. It takes as long as it takes to get your shape right.
Can I bring a shape I like?
Please do. Bring photos, or come with your brows filled in the way you usually wear them. I'll map your measurements and blend them with the look you love.
My brows are really uneven. Can mapping fix that?
Mapping is exactly how we balance uneven brows. I measure both sides from the same center line and build the shape so they look even, even if the natural hair underneath isn't.
